Fredericksburg Alliance For Student Achievement (FASA) created a sense of community with our students and their families. Its annual SOL Kick-Celebration began on April 15 in various parts of our local community, including Hazel Hill and Heritage Park this year. FASA aims to support FCPS students in preparing them for the upcoming SOL assessments by providing study materials they can complete at home with their parents. The FCPS Mobil Cafe and Super Cat Bus are present, providing additional instructional resources and snacks for all FCPS K-8 students.

Hugh Mercer Elementary School Garden Celebration The Hugh Mercer Elementary School PTA will host a garden celebration on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 1:00 to 4:00 to commemorate the re-establishment of the student garden. The event will take place in the garden courtyard at the back of Hugh Mercer Elementary School located at 2100 Cowan Blvd, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. Students, families, faculty, staff, and the community are welcome to attend and help celebrate. There will be a take-home planting activity for children and displays by Bee City Fredericksburg, the Friends of the Rappahannock, Fredericksburg Food Coop, Spotsylvania County Sheriff Animal Control Reptile Crew, and the R-Board. Thanks to our generous partners the Fredericksburg Workshop, Norfleet Quality Mulch, the Stone Center, Troy Michael Contracting, the Rappahannock Valley Garden Club, Virginia Master Gardeners, Costco, Meadows Farms, the Fredericksburg Food Coop, Earl’s True Value Hardware, Fredericksburg Clean and Green Commission, the Rappahannock Regional Solid Waste Management Board, the James Monroe High School Environmental Club, and Holcomb Contracting. Throughout the school year, students and parent volunteers installed a native flower and shrub bed as well as 8 raised vegetable beds to benefit all students at the school. The after-school Garden Club and parent volunteers' plant and take care of the garden weekly. HMES Teachers are incorporating this living resource in their classroom lessons as well as using it as a space for all to find respite during the day.

Digital Learning takes place every day at Hugh Mercer Elementary School, so this year the Patriots recognized Digital Learning Day a little differently. Students completed digital citizenship activities with their teacher and then were given agency to demonstrate their learning in one of two ways: either design their ideal personal learning device, or to create a digital citizenship advocacy campaign that focused on an aspect of digital well-being and health that was important to them. Students with the best submissions were invited to a robot pizza party with their ITC!
