Long-time Fredericksburg City Public Schools (FCPS) employee James “Jay” Snyder slated to join Hugh Mercer Elementary School as principal.
Snyder has been an FCPS employee since 2001, when he began as a social studies teacher at James Monroe High School. After 15 years in the classroom, he was named the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program Coordinator followed by serving in assistant principal roles both at James Monroe and at Walker-Grant Middle School.
Snyder holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from Virginia Tech, with concentrations in History, Communications, and Political Science, a Juris Doctorate from the University of Akron School of Law, and an endorsement in Educational Administration and Leadership from Longwood University.
Fredericksburg City Public Schools have always played a large role in the Snyder family, who has lived in the Fredericksburg area for over 20 years. Snyder’s wife is a proud graduate of FCPS, and their two sons both previously attended Hugh Mercer Elementary School. Currently, the boys are rising 7th and 9th graders. Snyder said, “When I decided to leave my corporate job and enter the education field, Fredericksburg was my first choice and has felt like home from day one.”
Forward thinking and excited, Snyder believes that his role as a leader is to support and “ensure that the Hugh Mercer community has the capacity, tools, and resources, to continue to be successful and strong.”
Superintendent Dr. Marci Catlett said, “We are extremely pleased to have Mr. Snyder join our Fredericksburg City Public Schools administrative team as the principal of Hugh Mercer Elementary. Mr. Snyder has led and served our school division for over 20 years and has a strong desire to continue the trajectory of progress demonstrated at Hugh Mercer Elementary.”
The School Board is expected to formalize his position at its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, August 1, 2022.
